EN 301 549 Compliance
Europe's comprehensive accessibility standard for ICT products and services. Required for EU public sector procurement and the European Accessibility Act deadline of June 2025.
What Is EN 301 549?
EN 301 549 is the harmonised European standard specifying accessibility requirements for ICT products and services — websites, mobile apps, software, hardware, and documents. It incorporates WCAG 2.1 Level AA for web content and adds requirements specific to non-web software and hardware.
The European Accessibility Act (EAA) mandates that a wide range of private sector products and services must comply with EN 301 549 by 28 June 2025. This affects businesses across the EU and any company selling into the EU market.
Key Requirements
- ✓ Web content: WCAG 2.1 Level AA (incorporated by reference)
- ✓ Non-web documents: equivalent WCAG-based criteria
- ✓ Mobile applications: platform-specific accessibility APIs
- ✓ Software: focus management, keyboard navigation, AT compatibility
- ✓ Accessibility statements published on all public-facing sites
- ✓ Feedback mechanism for users to report accessibility issues
EN 301 549 vs WCAG
WCAG covers web content. EN 301 549 goes further — covering mobile apps, desktop software, hardware, and documents, all under one standard.
EAA Deadline
28 June 2025
Private sector companies selling products or services in the EU must comply with the European Accessibility Act by this date.
